Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Their work supports critical research, development and advanced industrial applications, where performance, accuracy and reliability are essential.
This is a senior mechanical design position with genuine autonomy. You’ll play a key role in shaping new products and customer-specific solutions, working on intricate assemblies where detail, tolerance and long-term stability really matter.
The role
You’ll lead the mechanical design and detailing of precision components and assemblies, taking designs from early concept through prototyping, validation and into production. You’ll be trusted to make sound engineering decisions, influence design direction and uphold high standards across the wider team.
What you’ll be doing
- Leading mechanical design activity using 3D CAD
- Producing accurate detail and assembly drawings, tolerance analysis, BOMs and technical documentation
- Driving designs through prototype build, testing and validation
- Developing robust, scalable mechanical solutions to complex technical challenges
- Supporting customer-specific design requests alongside internal technical teams
- Providing technical input to manufacturing, supply chain and suppliers
- Creating realistic project plans and delivery timelines
- Peer reviewing designs and supporting the development of other engineers
- Contributing to continuous improvement of design processes and standards
What they’re looking for
- Degree-qualified Mechanical Engineer (or equivalent experience)
- Strong background in product development within a precision engineering environment
- Proven experience designing tight-tolerance mechanisms and stable mechanical structures
- Good understanding of materials, manufacturing processes and DfX principles
- Confident using SolidWorks or a comparable 3D CAD package
- Comfortable working independently and leading mechanical design work
- Experience collaborating closely with manufacturing and supply chain teams
- Experience in regulated or high-performance engineering sectors would be beneficial, but strong core mechanical design capability is the key requirement.
